There are many tips to save money and water when taking a shower. One of the most impactful is installing a low-flow shower head with an optional off switch. This type of shower head reduces the number of gallons of water used and allows you to stop running water whenever you are using soap and shampoo. If you already have an existing shower head installed this is an easy installation that can be accomplished be one person with little experience in under an hour.
Using a low-flow shower head reduces the number of gallons per minute to 2.5. A normal shower head releases anywhere from 5 to 8 gallons per minute. This can save the typical family approximately 8,000 gallons a year which equates to a saving of approximately $250 dollars.
Materials Needed
- Pliers/Wrench
- Rag
- Plumbers Tape
- Shower Head
Step 1. Determine the Water Pressure in your Home
The minimum requirement for a low-flow shower head is 2.5 gallons a minute. However, some of these products go much lower than this. The water power is also dependent on the water pressure. If you have lower water pressure, look for a shower head that is able to deliver a powerful stream of water regardless of water pressure.
Step 2. Choose your Shower Head
There are several different low-flow energy efficient shower heads on the market. They range in price from about $10 dollars to $100 dollars. At the higher price end, the shower head will often come with a stop switch and the ability to automatically adjust water flow regardless of the initial pressure. If you want to optimize your eco-friendly choice, use a shower head with a flexible arm in order to reduce the distance between your body and the water.
Two additional features to look for are a washer and a switch. The washer reduces water flow to a pin hole and the switch actually allows the water to be turned off when you are using soap.
Step 3. Turn off Water
Prior to installing the eco-friendly shower head, turn off the water supply. This will prevent leaks or accidentally turning on the water.
Step 4. Removing the Existing Shower Head
In order to prevent damaging the finish, use a rag and then turn the shower head using pliers. Remove this and either recycle or store it.
Step 5. Thread Plumbers Tape
Using the existing threads, wrap plumbers tape around a few times. To create a tight finish, cut the tape and make sure it lays flat on the threads. This will prevent future leaks.
Step 6. Install the New Shower Head
You are now ready to install your low-flow product. Follow the directions on the back of the package and make sure you are connecting it the right way. Take the rag and cover the shower head prior to tightening it with pliers. This prevents the chrome from being damaged.
Step 7. Test the Shower Head
You are now ready to test your shower head. Turn the water back on and make sure it does not leak. If it does leak, try tightening the shower head or redoing the plumber’s tape.
You are now ready to enjoy a quality shower experience while at the same time reducing your water consumption and energy bill.
