Replacing your Roof: Things You Need to Know

Last Updated on April 1, 2022 by Kravelv

When you first buy a home, you believe it’s going to last forever. But, the reality is that with wear and tear, homes grow old just like we do. To prevent further damage and preserve the quality of your home, it’s important to know when it’s time to replace your roof. Typically, roofs last for about 25 years before they need to be replaced. Then, you might want to start looking for some good roofing companies. But, it’s a good idea to analyze your roof beforehand so you can sense when you need to replace your entire roof before it’s too late. Having that knowledge won’t only save your home from irreversible damage, but it’ll save you much needed time and money that you can spend enjoying your humble abode.

Inspect the Shingles

Your shingles are an important part of your roof and can definitely indicate when it’s time to invest in a new roof. If you just see a couple of shingles that are worn down or out of place, then you could probably just replace those shingles and be safe. But, if you’re dealing with a ton of damaged and worn out shingles then it’s time to look into replacing your whole roof.

Be wary of:

  • Curling shingles
  • Cracked shingles
  • Missing shingles
  • Shingles covered in algae

All of these types of shingles could be signs that your roof is nearing the end of its life.

Gutters, Gutters, Gutters

The gutters are another part of your roof that should be looked over frequently. If it’s been 10 years since the roof has been replaced, then it may be time to get new ones. As time goes by the granules that protect the shingles become burned off from the sun. The shingles then begin to deteriorate. If you delay replacing your shingles when the time comes, it may force you to replace your entire roof.

Should You Call a Pro or DIY?

After you figure out whether your roof just needs a touch-up or is in need of an entire makeover, the next decision is whether to call a professional or DIY. The best way to figure this out is to analyze the damage throughout your roof. If it’s minor damage, then you may be a DIY project. Even if you think you can do it yourself, be sure to think it through. If you don’t do it well, then you may be doing more damage to your roof than what’s already there.

If you’re dealing with major damage or the whole roof needs to be redone, then it’s in your best interest to call some roofing contractors. An example of major damage would be if there are punctures throughout the whole roof.

When it comes to your roof, the best thing that you can be is aware. When little problems reveal themselves, react quickly in order to preserve the life of your roof. This will ensure that your roof lasts for its entire lifespan. But, when that lifespan comes to an end, checking the shingles and the gutters will tell you when you need to replace your whole roof. As long as you keep these things in mind, your roof will surely thank you in the end with durability and longevity.
