To keep your pool looking great and functioning for many years, you may need to do some pool resurfacing. When it’s time to do this, most people go with plaster because it’s easy to install and inexpensive. However, while it is easy on the wallet, there are some negatives you should know about that may make you think about other options.
The first negative aspect with plaster is that it lacks durability, meaning you may have to replace it in as little as 7 years. Additionally, plaster doesn’t wear well and develops cracks and tears easily, which means you’re going to be putting in a lot of repairs often.
There are a variety of other options available that last longer and will probably save you money in the long run which we look at here.
Fiberglass
One advantage fiberglass has is that it’s the least expensive of all the materials we’re going to look at. While it’s not the most durable, if you maintain it properly and take care of it, there’s no reason it shouldn’t last a long time. In addition, fiberglass is easy to clean and won’t affect the chemical makeup of the water, which means less work maintaining water quality.
Stone & Pebble
Many people opt for stone or pebble aggregate because it creates a natural, unique look that stands out. What’s nice about this material is that you can choose from a variety of colors and styles to match your backyard décor and landscaping. However, the downside to this material is that it’s expensive; it can be up to two times more expensive than plaster. But it’s not all negative, because with the high price you also get a highly durable material that’s going to last a up to 20 years with proper care and maintenance. Lastly, because the surface is rough, it provides better traction, which is important if you have little ones who like to run around the pool.
Quartz
Next to plaster, quartz is popular because it’s durable and looks great. Many estimates say that quartz can last up to 15 years, which is about twice as long as plaster. Another advantage to quartz is the wide variety of colors available; deep blues and purples create the illusion of a deep lake or lagoon.
Tile
Tile is probably the most expensive material on this list, not so much for the material itself but because of the labor required for installation. However, while tile is expensive, it’s one of the most durable and long lasting materials you can use. Also, tile is extremely easy to maintain, which means less work for you. Lastly, tile is available in virtually every color you can think of, which gives you more decorating choices than most other materials. Keep in mind that when it comes to the cost, it’s not just the materials you need to consider, but also the labor and prep work that goes into a pool remodeling & resurfacing project.
