There comes a time when all homes need to have their windows replaced – and it can be tempting to skimp on this improvement. After all, aren’t all windows the same? I’ve heard many homeowners try to justify going cheap on windows, but try to avoid picking your options based on price tags alone. Here’s a quick rundown of why these excuses don’t hold up.
Excuse 1: All windows are the same.
There’s a reason why manufacturers put a higher price on some windows: top-quality windows perform better than most. Such windows have been carefully engineered to provide better insulating value and protection from the local climate. They may look the same at first glance, but a single-pane vinyl casement window simply can’t perform as well as an insulated double-glazed window of the same type.
Excuse 2: It’s on a less exposed area of the house.
Since most windows are protected by the roof eaves, some homeowners assume that they will not be exposed to a lot of bad weather. Make no mistake, bad weather will hit your home from all angles. During high wind events such as tornadoes or intense thunderstorms, cheap windows are likely to be damaged.
Excuse 3: It looks “tough enough.”
Many homeowners estimate how durable their windows are based on looks alone. To avoid making the same mistake, pay attention to product ratings. Look for energy and impact resistance ratings, because labels provide much more information than an impromptu examination.
Excuse 4: Lower price = more savings.
Of course people want to cut down on expenses, but going cheap is going about saving wrong. Most of the time, that entire “savings” from the lower material and installation cost is lost when you end up spending more on future repairs and more frequent window replacement.
