So, you are moving house, it’s an exciting time and can also be a stressful one because there is so much to think about. Here are a few tips to help your move go smoothly.
Don’t Underestimate the Job in Hand
The amount of furniture and white goods you have to move is fairly obvious, but you just don’t realize how much stuff you have got hidden away in drawers, cupboards wardrobes and other storage facilities.
Chances are, there will be things you no longer want but are too big for the council refuse collector to take, so you need a company that will do rubbish removal. The last thing you want to do is to be taking things to your new home that you no longer want. If you contract a company that does rubbish removal as well as house removal, so much the better.
Planning is Key
The process of removing should start weeks, sometimes months before the day you move. If you leave it until two or three days before, it will be chaos, I guarantee you and you will probably still be packing up when the removal van arrives.
Packing Up
Some removal companies will provide tea chests or other packing cases if you use one that doesn’t you will need to source your own materials. Packing cases fill up quickly, the shape of many household objects mean that they take up a lot of room. It’s better to have more than you need rather than not enough.
Labelling
Devise a system of labelling so the removal men know which room in the new house you want each box moving to. Also, you need you to identify what is in each box so you can quickly find your kettle toaster, crockery, and cutlery. It will take you a few days to unpack and settle into your new property and you are bound to need something that is still packed away. If your labelling enables you to know what is in which box, you can find what you need quickly.
Don’t hoard
As you get ready to move, you will come across clothes you haven’t worn for years or things you haven’t used and had forgotten about. Don’t be tempted to keep them for old times sake, just get rid. These are things you need to bag up and put in a pile in your garage or shed. They should be labelled rubbish removal, you don’t want the bags getting mixed up with things you are taking.
A Word About Garages and Sheds
It isn’t just the contents of your home you need to move, most likely your garage and shed will be stockpiled with stuff too. So, make sure the number of packing cases you order covers things in outbuildings too.
Heavy Objects
It is best to tell the removal men in advance if you have any objects that are very heavy, such as a piano, a large oak wardrobe or showpiece sideboard. Also, bear in mind that if you have had any furniture assembled in the room it is in, it may need to be disassembled in order for it to be moved. Removal men won’t want to do this, you should make sure it is done in advance and that the pieces are all ready to go.
Professional Services
I have provided a few tips, but it is always best to discuss your move with professionals who move people every day and know all the pitfalls. Clearabee is one such company, they are only too happy to help clients make sure the removal goes to plan. They will also deal with any rubbish removal.
